About us

The Her Dignity Initiative is a girl-child empowerment initiative helping girls in Nigeria access the resources, support and opportunities they need to learn, grow and fulfil their potential.

Our mission

To help girls in Nigeria access the resources, support and opportunities they need to learn, grow and fulfil their potential.

Our vision

A future where every girl has every opportunity, and where receiving support never costs her dignity.

Why it matters

FA
Our founder

Francisca Nwamaka Akujobi

Founder, The Her Dignity Initiative

As a young student, I once unexpectedly started my period at school during a time when I had a very heavy flow. My light-blue school uniform became visibly stained before I realised what had happened.

Fortunately, I had a cardigan I could tie around my waist, but I still had to remain in school feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious. That experience stayed with me. It made me think about what happens when a girl gets her period at school and simply does not have access to the product she needs.

“No girl should have to leave school or publicly ask for help because her period started.”

Our values

01

Dignity first

Support is given respectfully and discreetly. No girl should feel diminished by receiving help.

02

Privacy by default

We record what we must to stay accountable, and avoid collecting unnecessary personal data.

03

Fairness

We work with schools and community contacts through a fair, considered process.

04

Radical transparency

Every contribution is accounted for, with receipts, records and a report back to supporters.

05

Test, measure, improve

We start small, measure honestly and refine each model before we scale it.

06

Built to last

We design for local sourcing and replenishment from day one, not one-off giveaways.

Where we are today

A young initiative, built on trust from day one.

The Her Dignity Initiative is currently being developed. Our first two initiatives, Period Dignity and Ready for School, are proposed projects, and we are building carefully: small, specific pilots with clear budgets, honest reporting and complete respect for the girls we serve.

We are not yet a registered charity, and contributions are not tax-deductible. Every contribution is handled through clearly communicated arrangements with transparent records.
